Acne Treatment Using Various Compounded Solutions
What is Acne?
Acne is a common long-term or short term skincare problem within adults, men, and women, and teenagers. This happens when blackheads or oil from the skin (oil from the sebaceous gland) block or clog the pores and further cause inflammation. Initially, acne can be treated when it’s mild using over the counter (OTC) drugs and readily available medicines (using the combination of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, etc.). However, if it’s not treated at an early stage, it becomes severe and can lead to lifelong scarring.

Types of Acne

Mild: Breakouts happen in small numbers in certain parts and quantities on the forehead/cheek/chin area. Within teens, these are observed usually. Within adults, milia are observed in fewer quantities near cheek/chin. No scarring and inflammation happen.
Medium: Breakouts happen in smaller quantities or certain areas of the skin. Blackheads, whiteheads, and milia will be seen in increased numbers. Acne/ spots will be bigger in size including pus inside these – inflammation of the skin will also be observed.
Severe and Cystic: This type of acne get spread in larger quantities on the various parts of the face; acne appears severe red and yellow and affects the deeper layers of the skin – this is when you must consult with a physician to prevent cystic acne.  Topical and oral medication are required to reduce inflammation, pus, and scarring.

Why does it happen?

Bacteria, inflammation, and blocked pores owing to excessive oil from the sebum gland or dead cells, blackheads accumulate acne is formed on the skin.

How to get rid of Acne?

Here is a short video with Amy Khan, the founder of Custom Health RX (the pharmacy is a proud PCCA member with 20+ years of experience in clinical pharmacy ) – she talks about acne and how these are treated with individual care and based on individual skin conditions at her clinical pharmacy. Also, below you will find three techniques to keep yourself away from Acne.

  1. Keeping your face clean from dead cells, extra oil that block the pores and cause acne. Scrubbing, exfoliating soaps or solutions, cleansing lotions, and face cleansing pads help to clean the pores. Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide both work as clogged pore cleaners, however, salicylic acid primarily acts well for non-inflammatory acne (removing whiteheads, blackheads, and dead cells) and benzoyl peroxide for inflammatory acne.
  2. Face cleansing pads are developed by experienced clinical pharmacists at Custom Health RX, the only compounding pharmacy in Canton, MI with the combination of Salicylic Acid 2%, Sulfacetamide 5%, Clindamycin 0.5% available in various strengths to exfoliate and produce natural skin cell turnover and add to these pads. Depending on the strengths these can be used daily or on a weekly basis.
  1. Keeping face bacteria-free to prevent infection: A customized toner or compounded lotion works well here.

  2. To prevent swelling, irritation due to skin redness
At Custom Health RX (www.customhealthrx.com), we create ‘Spironolactone Gel’ for the primary treatment of hormonal-pattern acne which may take up one to two months to get fully cured.
An individual undergoing acne treatment may also be provided compounded gels/creams/lotions/ointments to decrease post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – this is because once acne has been treated, marks are left on the skin. Custom Health RX provides skin brightening/lightening compounds, hyperpigmentation kit using various strengths to reduce blemishes / prominent marks on the skin.
All the above ingredients make the skin more sensitive to the Sun and hence, proper Sun protection is a must when you go out in the Sun.

How can compounding help to treat acne?
Though early acne can be treated with over the counter (OTC) drugs available commercially, acute acne needs to be treated with compounded medications containing the higher strengths of the ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and others suited to one’s current lifestyle, food habit, stress level, skin condition, sensitivity, skin and acne type, etc.
